20181130: Friday 30th November: Sound Tradition; The John Ward Trio

Support: Richard Sutton

Suffolk-based group Sound Tradition, Linda Baddeley, David Bartlett, Catherine Legg and Moose, perform carefully arranged and vocally embroidered traditional folk songs, mostly unaccompanied. Amongst others, they respectfully doff their caps to Peter Bellamy, Young Tradition, Annie Briggs, The Coppers, Steeleye Span, Johnny Collins, Mike Waterson, Walter Pardon, Harry Cox and Sam Larner. Rapidly building a reputation well beyond their East Anglian roots, David, Linda, Catherine and Moose are an a cappella folk foursome who sing in glorious harmony. Their varied repertoire, taken from Medieval times to the modern day, ranges from lively chorus songs to lilting ballads, and their arrangements always respect the heritage of the English folk tradition. They have proudly supported such luminaries as Martin Carthy, Dave Swarbrick, Chris Wood and Roy Bailey, but also enjoy the main stage in their own right. Their second CD, ‘Well Met My Friend’ is out now!

"Powerful and rousing traditional songs with lovely harmonies. Go and see them!" Pete Morton.

“Terrific - glorious harmonies and a fine selection of old and new songs.” Lewes Folk Club

John is a singer/songwriter and musician from Lowestoft, UK, who writes and performs many different types and styles of acoustic music. He currently has seven albums to his credit, the most recent of which, 'Sargasso' was released in 2016. The John Ward Trio brings together John, his wife vocalist Lynne Ward, and Les Woodley, whose powerful 3-part harmonies blend to give a richer life to John’s original songs and his traditional repertoire. Accompanied by guitar, double bass, mandolin, harmonica, whistles and bodhran, and with their familiar, relaxed banter, stories and humour, the Trio delights folk club and festival audiences around the country. John is an East Anglian boy, and, when the occasion demands, the Trio loves to specialise in his East Coast heritage songs and traditional music of the land and the sea.

This is the Trio's first appearance at Cambridge Folk Club.

"John Ward has a soundscape pictorial of Journeymusic and storyboards....Fabulous!" Sue Marchant, BBC Local Radio.

Richard Sutton, Norwich-based solo acoustic singer songwriter, is a familiar figure in the East Anglia music scene. He has spent over 10 years performing in a variety of bands but chose to go solo acoustic in March 2015 so that he could throw all his energy into his main passion - songwriting. He brings together the power and poetry of words with well crafted melodies and enticing chord progressions to create vivid and moving songs that speak of the triumphs and adversities of the human condition. There is an honesty, frailty, strength, and intensity to his songs that is hard to resist. With well honed guitar skills and rich low vocal tones, Richard is no clone of the latest musical fad but an original, interpreting and delivering music in his own well developed style.
