20181026: Friday 26th October: Green Diesel

Support: The Gillies

Folk-rock band Green Diesel (Jon Biron, Matt Dear, Ellen Care, Ben Holliday, Colin Ireland and Greg Ireland) first emerged in 2009, inspired by English folk lore and legend and the classic folk rock sound of Fairport Convention and The Albion Band. Green Diesel’s sound blends violin, mandolin, dulcimer and accordion with electric guitars and drums to bring English traditional music to a modern audience.

Performing original compositions alongside inventive reworkings of traditional songs and tunes, the band has been praised for its songwriting, musicianship and energetic performances. With numerous festival appearances to their credit, they’ve shared stages with the likes of Gilmore and Roberts, Spiers and Boden and Fotheringay. Newcomers to Cambridge Folk Club, this appearance is part of their Autumn tour.

“An established band simply getting better,” FolkWords.

The Gillies: Susan Turner (vocals, tenor guitar) and Mark (Gilly) Evans (guitar, dobro) are an Americana-influenced alternative folk duo. Their songs, whose lyrics often recall the time they spent in Norfolk, typically include a sense of darkness, a twist of fate, the complications of tangled relationships and a timeless sense of mystery. With Susan’s poignant, Emmylou-Harris-tinged vocals laid above the contrasting timbres of their intertwining picked guitars, The Gillies’ arrangements are distinctive and personal.  Their second album, ‘No Hiding Place’, was released in March.

We have really worked on how the two guitars work together, creating intricate picking patterns that fall and conflict and harmonise with each other,” Susan Turner.
