20190628: Friday 28th June: Showcase with Oka Vanga; Tennessee Twin; and Elie Rees
Oka Vanga and Tennessee Twin, two of this evening’s three acts, are our guests on the Club Stage at this year’s Cambridge Festival.
Oka Vanga: Whether singing, playing guitar, ukulele or mandolin, the relaxed banter and gift for story telling of Angela Meyer and William Cox makes their live performances of traditional and original material both interesting and memorable. As a highly skilled guitar duo, their performances quickly caught the attention of the guitar community, and they released an EP in 2013. Their debut album, Pilgrim, was awarded Best Instrumental Album by FATEA magazine in 2014, and they were joined on their second album, Dance of the Copper Trail (2017), by Patsy Reid (fiddle) and Oliver Copeland (double bass).
“Oka Vanga deliver their folk and roots style through outstanding musicianship and thoughtful composition, together with emotive vocals, to bring life to their songs” - FolkWords.
Tennessee Twin: Geoff and Victoria’s modern country music and original songs, which blend memorable melodies, gritty yet thoughtful lyrics and delicious harmonies, have caught the imagination of country audiences. Their musical talent shines through from their first note to their last encore. Not only do they have 2000 performances to their joint credit, but they are also internationally acclaimed song writers. When their original song 'Wings of Red, White and Blue' won the Nashville Music City song writing competition in March 2018, they went out to Nashville to record it. They have a busy gigging and recording schedule, with an EP scheduled for release in June 2019, and a full album later in this year.
“Their duet was so beautiful that it actually make me cry” - Keren Morrall, Country On The Coast Music Festival.
Elie Rees: Singer/songwriter Elie has created her own acoustic niche with edgy and emotive songs. A punk-rock side to her writing combines with catchy melodies and bold lyrics to create a singer/songwriter with attitude. She includes songs by artists such as Joni Mitchel, Dolly Parton, Blondie and Paloma Faith in her set lists for a folksy and charismatic show. Her first solo EP, ‘Welcome to Wonderland’, about her personal journey to self-expression, is out now.
“Talented singer/song-writer Elie Rees really gets to the heart of the matter in her songs. She takes you on her personal journey which the listener, most definitely, will relate to in some way. Honest and heartfelt, while at the same time touching on the edgy and raw” - Anita Wardell, jazz vocalist.
